On Friday, March 14, 2025, we gathered at Believer’s Baptist Church in Tarkwa, in Ghana’s Western Region, to officially launch the Wassa Nwoma Kronkron (the Wassa translations of the books of Luke and Acts). For the very first time, the Wassa people heard the Word of God in their own language and the joy in the room was contagious.
This launch is part of a larger, long-awaited dream: to provide the over 500,000 Wassa-speaking people of southwestern Ghana with a Bible in their own language. Until now, they’ve relied on Akan translations such as Asante and Fante. But thanks to your prayers and support, the Wassa Bible Translation Project, begun in 2023, is making remarkable progress. This initial release of Luke, Acts is just the beginning. Up next: the full New Testament, followed by the entire Bible by 2030!
More than just a celebration, this event was also a time to share the vision and equip the local churches with new ministry tools. Recognising the importance of building momentum and ownership early on, we invited the community to engage, share feedback, and stand with us in bringing Scripture fully to life in Wassa.
A highlight of the day was the presentation of the Jesus Film, now dubbed entirely in the Wassa language. This incredible milestone was made possible through our close collaboration with the Local Council of Churches and the Great Commission Movement of Ghana. To have such a powerful ministry tool available at this early stage in the translation process is, without a doubt, a game-changer.
We’re especially grateful to the donor who generously funded the dubbing of the film. Because of their support, four local film teams are now being recruited to use the Jesus Film in outreach and church planting across Wassa-speaking communities. This same donor has funded a follow-up film titled Walking with Jesus, which will further support discipleship and church growth in the region.
This is a major blessing for the Church in Wassa and it’s a first in Biblica’s ministry history! Never before have we been able to integrate a localized film and Scripture translation at such an early phase of a Bible project.
Here are a few key moments from the event:
- Nana Abena Boaduwaa II (Apinto Hemaa), our gracious chairperson, thanked Biblica for championing this work and pledged her full support moving forward.
- Lydia Munene, our Vice President for Africa, shared her deep excitement about the project, calling it “more than gold.” This was a beautiful reference to Tarkwa’s three gold mines and a reminder of the priceless value of Scripture in one’s mother tongue.
- Thomas Amoah, our Regional Director for West Africa, told the touching story of how this all began through conversations with local church leaders. That dialogue led to our fruitful partnership with the Great Commission Movement of Ghana (GCMG), who helped bring the Jesus Film to life in Wassa.
